From rescued hive to golden harvest, our Rooftop Beehive Journey
Above the bustle of Wynyard Quarter, a quiet corner of the Park Hyatt Auckland rooftop has become home to a thriving community of rescued honeybees. A beginning of a rehoming effort has transformed into a story of sustainability.
In partnership with Bees Up Top, our rooftop hive was carefully relocated to provide a safe and permanent home for a swarm in need. Rather than being destroyed, a common fate for unwanted hives, these bees were given a second chance and a new environment where they could flourish. Surrounded by native plantings, pōhutukawa, flax, wildflowers and the greenery woven throughout the waterfront precinct.
Every day, they collecting nectar from local blossoms and slowly created something truly extraordinary: our first harvest of pure, local, in‑house honey, now crafted into jars available at The Pantry.
Why rehoming bees matters
Rehoming honeybees is a powerful act of environmental stewardship. Here is why:
- Protecting local bee populations: Relocated swarms avoid extermination, helping maintain healthy numbers of pollinators essential to food systems.
- Supporting biodiversity: Bees pollinate native plants and urban greenery, strengthening the ecological resilience of cities.
- Reducing waste: A rescued hive means thousands of bees continue producing honey, beeswax and pollination benefits instead of being lost.
- Promoting sustainable urban beekeeping: Rooftop hives reduce pressure on rural ecosystems while turning unused city spaces into thriving habitats.
By choosing rescued hives, Bees Up Top ensures each colony is responsibly cared for and contributes to a more sustainable, pollinator‑friendly Auckland.
